Your skin reacts, your hair changes silently: what happens under (and after) the sun?

Sunway by Oway: a selection of agricosmetics for skin and hair exposed to sun, salt, chlorine and wind. Nourishment, hydration and cosmetic protection to get you through the summer.

Sunlight, salt, wind and water alter the appearance – and more – of skin and hair. Looking after them in summer means caring for them before, during and after exposure, with measures that restore hydration, nourishment and comfort.

Have you ever noticed that the sun darkens your skin but lightens your hair?

It’s one of summer’s little paradoxes. The skin is a living tissue: when it encounters light, it triggers a response and produces melanin, the pigment that contributes to the change in complexion.

Hair, on the other hand, cannot regenerate the melanin that the sun breaks down. For this reason, after repeated exposure, it may appear lighter, but also more fragile, dry and dull.

That lightening is not merely an aesthetic effect. It is the visible sign of a deeper transformation: the hair fibre is subjected to light, salt, sand, chlorine and frequent washing. The skin reveals this immediately, exuding heat, dryness and tightness. Hair does so more slowly: by losing softness, elasticity and shine.

Then there is another fact, less obvious but equally fascinating: plants too have learnt to live with light. The sun is nourishment, yes, but in excess it can become a source of stress. This is why the plant world produces substances capable of absorbing, mitigating and counteracting the effects of radiation: a form of botanical intelligence in every sense.

Salt, wind, chlorine: the grammar of summer

Summer does not affect only the surface.

The sun warms the skin, sea water leaves a layer of salt, chlorine alters the texture of the skin and hair shaft, the wind dries it out, and frequent washing can strip it of its natural oils. All of this happens gradually. Day after day, the skin may appear less supple and more dehydrated; the hair may become coarser, harder to comb, and less shiny along the lengths.

Summer skincare becomes essential. This doesn’t mean you have to add an endless number of steps, but the key lies in making them more targeted. Do you need to cleanse? Yes, of course, but without stripping the skin. Nourish? Absolutely, but without weighing it down.

Checklist: a short how-to guide for sun exposure

Things you know (and do) and things you probably wouldn’t want to hear:

  • 1-    Fresh water reset
  • After the sea or pool, rinse your body and hair with fresh water as soon as you can. As they dry, salt and chlorine can leave your skin and hair strands rougher, duller and dehydrated.
  •
  • 2-    Focus on the ends
  • They are the most exposed and fragile part of the hair. Before spending time outdoors, focus your treatment on the lengths and the areas that tend to dry out most easily.
  •
  • 3-    Beach waves, but in moderation
  • Salt adds texture, but it can strip the hair if left on for hours on end. Alternate the irresistible tousled look of summer with nourishing and restorative treatments.
  • 4    After-sun every day, not just in emergencies
  • Your skin doesn’t need to turn red to ask for care. After sun exposure, restore comfort, hydration and softness with a regular routine.

  • 5-    Preventative mask
  • Don’t wait until your hair looks dull or dry. In summer, the hair shaft gradually accumulates stress: a regular mask helps maintain shine, elasticity and manageability.
  • 6-    Lightweight textures that make you want to apply them
  • In summer, what wins out is what you enjoy using: light, dry, sensorial formulas that are easy to apply and reapply, and don’t weigh hair down.

  • 7-    Create a mini beach bag routine
  • One product to protect the lengths, one to cleanse when you get back, and one to nourish afterwards. Just a few simple steps, but done properly.

  • 8-    Remember that after-sun care starts in the shower
  • Cleansing is the first step: if it’s too harsh, your skin feels tight and your hair loses its body. If it’s restorative, it sets the stage for everything that follows.
